It is Sam Houliston in a grey blazer and light gray button-up shirt standing outdoors near a brick building with glass windows. He is probably thinking about employment law or death metal.

Sam Houliston - employment barrister

I have worked in Aotearoa as a barrister and solicitor since admission in 2006.

I hold degrees in law, and management and employment relations awarded by the University of Auckland.

My civil and criminal litigation experience has touched most areas of law, and involved people across many industries and professions.

I have represented the Department of Labour in health and safety prosecutions. I have adjudicated ACC reviews. I have worked in Auckland law firms, and as an in-house employment lawyer.

Before I went to the independent bar, the Doyle’s Guide described me as a “future leading lawyer” in employment and workplace health and safety law in Aotearoa.

In my current role, I am an employment law specialist.

I am Auckland-based, but work with clients across Aotearoa.

While my background is in litigation, my aim is to resolve problems at an earlier stage. I can advise on employment obligations and compliance to protect your position in the event of a dispute.

Where needed, I am experienced at helping people through mediation and the dispute process.

I am a member of the New Zealand Law Society, and the New Zealand Bar Association.

As a barrister sole, in most employment law cases I can take instructions directly from clients.

I am available for instruction to appear in the Employment Court. I will need an instructing solicitor, but can explain this to you in person.

More information is set out in my terms of engagement and information for clients which are provided prior to engagement.
